Best of the week 36 at #nomadict 2021
Ever since I watched the movie “Interstellar” I’ve been kind of obsessed with glaciers. Those massive ice formations are just impressive to see, whether it’s from outside or inside. I’ve been to quite a few glaciers now and Aletsch is one of my favorites. We were invited by the tourism board to come over for 4 days and we had great activities there. We did a glacier walk with a local guide, jumped off a steep hill with a paraglider, entered a clear blue ice cave and saw the sunrise from the highest viewpoint around the glacier.
The day of the winning shot was quite a stressful one. We started our way to Switzerland with only three hours of sleep and had a busy program. In the evening we still decided to go for another hike to a viewpoint that’s not as popular and touristic. While being there, many sheep surrounded us and they were not shy at all! On the contrary, they were so curious that they came close to us and we were able to pet them!
To be surrounded by so many trustful sheep is quite uncommon. We tried to get as close as possible to get some good shots of them with the glacier in the background. I tried to take a photo of a black baby sheep, while Niko (@patheight) captured this Valais Blacknose sheep. Actually, he took this photo at the perfect moment. Normally on our trips we take photos together and share them with each other afterwards.

Sunset just passed and it was getting dark quickly, while the sky was still very bright. In the editing process I tried to bring back the sunset feeling of the sky, without making everything else too dark. I also softened the background and enhanced the structure and sharpness of the sheep itself.
I realized that sometimes, even when you’re tired and out of energy, it’s still worth going out and using the opportunity to take photos when the conditions are great. Trips can be tiring, and it’s a talent to focus on something else and shift your mindset. I just came back from a beautiful trip in Norway and spent a few days in Hamburg at a photo festival. After a month on the road, I’m glad to sleep in my own bed again and spend some time at home. But Norway has been amazing. We saw so many beautiful locations, we were even lucky enough to see very intense northern lights. That’s so much more than I expected for 2021!
