Landscape photographer based in France

My journey through photography and traveling started when I moved from France to China in 2016. I felt the desire to explore a completely new world, a new culture and meet new people. I really wanted to challenge myself and put myself into a new way of living. So after many years working in Paris, I applied to several jobs abroad and finally got a job offer for a French company in Beijing, China. I decided to seize the opportunity! I have always been passionate about history and I am attracted by visiting historical places I have only seen in movies and series such as the Great Wall, the Terracotta warriors and the Forbidden City. China is a very ancient civilization with a strong history of dynasties; when you are there you have the feeling you can see and feel a piece of history.

"Also, people care a lot about their history, are proud of what their country achieved in the past and are very happy to share with foreigners."
"I am very attracted by their unique culture, though it took me a little while to get to this point of deeper understanding."

Everything was so different for me, so every day was a new challenge. With time I got better in adapting to the culture and understanding the language, I made local friends and lived like a local. I think these are the best ways to establish a nice and comfortable life in China when you had been used to a culture so different from the chinese culture. I was also confronted with the fact that I was the outsider in my new situation; the ‘’European white culture’’ seemed very attractive for the Chinese. They are very curious and asked me many questions about how is France and Paris.

"Since I had so many opportunities to travel through Asia and discover amazing countries, I decided to capture with a camera all these wonderful places I have been able to visit throughout the years."

My passion for the unique Asian culture and landscapes together with an increasing interest in photography made me decide to get into travel photography after a while. I met many photographers in China who impressed me a lot but also friends who pushed me to get into photography more seriously. I remember meeting a very friendly wildlife photographer in Beijing who was happy to share photography tips with a stranger, me. And when I travelled to the deserts of Mongolia, I have this memory of long talks about how to shoot the Milky Way with a former Chinese military who then decided to focus on landscape photography.

"I find these moments of strangers having a world of differences in between them being united sharing the same passion just amazing."
"Asia has been and still is a great source of inspiration for me as a photographer. The way of living and culture is different, new, and influenced the way I choose and compose my photographs."

Through my photography I tried to show the diversity of culture and minorities such as the Han, the Ouygur and the Vietnamese people. Also I wanted to share the diversity of landscapes from the hot desert of Mongolia to the sharp mountains in Shaanxi region and the Green valleys of the Guangxi region. I remember well a trip to the Great Wall of China, when I was in the wild part called JianKou to capture the beautiful scenes there. I was planning to camp and spend the night there but I got caught in a terrible storm with ice and thunders. I can’t describe my emotion when I got caught by this unpredictable weather on the top of one of the most impressive historic monuments. I found shelter in a small ancient tower and waited for the storm to go away to go back to my tent. It was worth it though; the light in the next morning was just gorgeous!

"With each trip, I learn something new. Whether it is about photography, a country, history, life or about myself."

Traveling opens your mind and your eyes, you start to question yourself and your way of living. For example, my move to China also changed my opinion about Asia, it is a place much more free, open and dynamic then I thought it was. When you go to a new country, live there for a couple of years, and then come back to Europe you are just not the same. You learn so much by meeting so many people who open your mind and see so many things that contradict what you thought to be true that your life changes, your personality changes. Also, travelling makes you more flexible and helps you to live in the present, which I really appreciate.

I hope that through my photography I can show to others the diversity of the world and convey that there is more than what we know. Not just in terms of landscapes, but also in cultures, values, perspectives, and so on. With my editing, I really want to spread a message and evoke emotions. It is very hard for a photographer to find its style which matches our emotions, but with patience you will notice evolution and you get better in connecting to your own emotions and therefore finding your own style. I like to see my photos as a painting that tells a story about the place, the people, and all the history behind the scene. Photography is getting more and more popular among the new generation, photos can be shared very quickly and have a potential huge impact on people.

"Photography is a powerful tool to convey messages and I believe we should use that."

Besides showcasing my photos, I also love to tell the stories behind and share my impressions with others. In the end of 2019 I was walking around my district in Paris and noticed an open Art Gallery just across the street which was exposing shots from Kyrgyzstan. I got curious and decided to get inside. There, I met the General Secretary of this NGO, whose role was to promote French culture among the Asian migrants in France. We talked a lot about my past experience and the General Secretary quickly understood my passion for Asia and travel. He proposed me to expose 15 of my best shots around the theme of China. This was a great chance to not only show my photos, but also share my story. When you print and expose a photo people will come to you and ask many questions about the place, the people and the history.

"I think an exhibition is a great way to engage with people and share experiences much more extensively and profound than you can do on Instagram for example."
"I made close friends in China, folks with an international background and who encouraged me to travel and put my photography from the scratch to a next level."

This experience abroad and my travels allowed me to develop myself as a more adventurous person and find my style in photography. Since photography, especially the editing part, is so closely connected to personality and how you experience what you are living, it also helped me to find myself. Knowing myself better but also surprising myself in many different ways; because when you step out of your comfort zone and into a new situation, the old suddenly doesn’t function and you are forced to develop a new you, acquiring skills and doing things you never thought you’d be able to.

"The world is full of opportunities. You are full of opportunities. You just need to dare yourself to take a step and search for them."
