Landscape photographer based in Germany

My passion for traveling started many years ago, on a trip to Bali back in 2016. Since then I am fascinated about the understanding of life in different cultures. I truly love seeing all the beautiful places our earth has to offer; seeing and appreciating life, I believe, is very important for a better understanding of our natural surroundings. Photography jumped in a little later, when I bought my first drone that I took on my trip to Indonesia in 2018.

"As soon as I came back to Germany I bought a Sony Alpha 7 and started to take photos during all my travels and adventures."

A big inspiration for me was the work of Chris Burkhard and Jordan Hammond, who are professional landscape and travel photographers. In the beginning I was just shooting sunrises and sunsets during my travels, edited them, and that was it. But I have been learning a lot and I continue working in order to improve every day, although there’s still a lot left to learn to actually reach the level of photography I would like to have. I’m starting to work as a freelance photographer, so photography is becoming the biggest part of my professional life and I am investing a lot of energy in there now. It’s quite challenging sometimes… I was used to have a very structured life during my Bachelor’s: 30 hours a week at university, then full time studying for exams and finishing all the presentations, projects and exams and I was done. I got all the info, I knew what to study and I accomplished the work at the given deadlines. As a Freelance Photographer though, you have to do all on your own. Finding all the information you need to work on different projects, reaching out yourself to numerous businesses to hopefully partner up with and achieving your own deadlines while keeping all the other things up and running. I’m improving all the time but it is not an easy process. Over the time I got better it setting deadlines and making working schedules to create a better structure.

"This change of life, together with my travel experiences, made me reflect a lot."

I started questioning about the meaning of life some years ago, like many of you probably have been doing at some point as well. I came to the conclusion that it’s probably about experiencing yourself during life and that ‘experiencing yourself’ has two different meanings for me. The first one is that I always want to develop my personality and my body. I want and need to do this because I absolutely hate stagnation in any area of my life. Secondly I think that it’s important to be conscious about yourself and about what’s happening around you in any aspect. I truly want to pay attention to my surroundings and the people around me. It also includes reflecting on my own life, my own deeds and the current state of my body and mind.

"Self feedback and self reflection is essential to me, but also feedback from others and especially from family, friends, coaches, my sister and my partner."

For me, development goes together with a conscious life, as in experiencing yourself during life. Really important experiences were my separation from my previous partner late 2018, the feelings of loneliness when I was traveling alone for one month in Panama early 2019 and the feelings of not achieving enough in general. Experiencing all of these events in a conscious way helped me a lot to develop my personality, to go through the whole process of becoming a photographer and to actually live my life as a photographer now.

Before photography, I thought ‘I am like that’ but since I’m a photographer I have evolved and now I know better who I am and that I can become a better person every day. I try to apply the same to my photos: my photos and edits can be optimized all the time. So far, I really think that my Gobi desert picture is one of my best ones, mostly because there are no distractions for the viewer. According to me, a good picture consist of 3 characteristics. The first one would be the use of light and shadow, with soft morning or evening light. The second one is a point of interest like a mountain, a reflection, a human or an animal. And the last, and maybe most important part, is the clean frame. I mean that try to create a picture without any distractions, clean leading lines and enough negative space. Creating a picture with all these 3 attributes can be very difficult, but in surroundings like a desert or a vast arctic location it is much easier.

In general, when taking a photo and before I edit any picture, I think about what is the most important subject of the picture. Then I’ll make sure that, through the photo, the viewer gets an easy guide to the centre, which can be a person, a mountain range or something else. And for the unity I always try to get similar colors in every column of my feed because unity creates a more enjoyable overall look.

"Besides photography being a stimuli to improve every day and to communicate my vision of the world, it’s also the perfect medium to save my best ‘visible’ memories from my travels."

I’m very grateful to have the possibilities to travel to many amazing places around the world. I had saved a lot of money over the years working as a tennis instructor, and though I liked it, I knew it wasn’t what I was looking for. I cannot be thankful enough having discovered photography, because it saved me from never finding my true passion in life and work. Just thank you to the universe!
