I’m Ahmad Tito. I was born in a very beautiful place, Indonesia. After having been confused for some years, in search of my purpose and exploring my potential, I found photography.
I used to be afraid of traveling for different reasons and because of certain obstacles. However, my urge to get out of my comfort zone to forge personal growth had me take the first steps. My friends and family supported me in this discovery phase and I managed to leave my comfort zone for the good.
I work as an artist and develop the potential that exists within me by doing a variety of jobs. Usually, I offer travel documentation services to prospective clients, and I collaborate with outdoor or travel brands to make video or photo campaigns for their products.
My first paid gig I believe I obtained as a result of personal branding. What is most important to me in building a brand is consistency and innovation. If consistent without innovation, it is difficult to move forward and to move fast. This doesn’t solely refer to the photographs or visual outcome of your creations, but also all else that comes with your brand such as how you post and act on social media, how you analyze and search for opportunities, and how you collaborate with others. As a visual creator (but actually anyone) we should find our unique selling point; I did this by researching the needs and desires of the existing market, connecting with my own interests and knowledge, and searching the right places for opportunities.
The project that has been special so far is the Magic of East Java film. I made this film with a production time span of four years. The time spent and lessons I learned during the four years that I studied filmmaking, is reflected in this film, or at least, I tried to incorporate everything as best as I could.
I am really happy with what I am doing and most of all, it enables me to promote my country all over the world. There are so many unexplored places in Indonesia, besides the few places that some people are aware of. Indonesia has Mount Merapi, tropical forests, waterfalls, valleys, caves, culture, lots of islands… It’s a complete world. This drives me to work as much as possible – so everyone knows what Indonesia is, where it is, and who we are. I also try to educate and inspire as an aspiring creator from Indonesia who aims to show value to his country.
So, when I won Best of the Week with Nomadict, I was very happy. I have been trying and hoping to be part of the contest one day and when I was mentioned in the Instagram stories for the selection and later for having won, I was surprised and super excited – I could now reach more people to introduce the diversity of my country too. My photos from Indonesia are some of my best work and the fact that I won the contest with this drone shot of the Tumpak Sewu waterfall, is just amazing.
Actually, this place is very famous for a lot of drones falling down because of the wind and the magnetic field that makes the drone pilot’s feathers stand up. It requires special calculations to photograph this waterfall from an interesting point to have a nice in-camera composition, and to, at the same time, get the photo sharp. I went early in the morning because the wind was almost non-existent, which largely increases the chance to get a proper photo. I also used a flat lay angle in taking pictures so that the subject looked like a tree of life. With manual settings in the drone, adjusting the white balance, and several other settings such as shutter speed, iso, composition, diaphragm, I finally got this photoshoot.
I wanted to convey the message of the subject in this photo – the tree of life. For that, I tried to follow the natural color tone and light from the morning so that it makes the tree look fresh. I adjusted some lighting, color gradation, perspective, and dodging and burning in Photoshop. Shooting and editing are like a puzzle, which through technical skills and intuition, you can solve. In the world of photography and traveling, there is something that we have to work on because without us honing this skill, over time, it will become dull like a knife. I keep working, take as many videos as possible, travel, and meanwhile, intensely enjoy this very beautiful natural beauty that we call Earth.
