Travel and documentary photographer based in Peru

My name is Nicolas Castermans and I am a French photographer from the Alps. Today, I consider myself to be both a digital nomad and a photographer. I have been traveling for the past seven years, managing a travel and trekking agency in Peru, and as a freelancer for the last four years documenting all my adventures.

Having grown up in the Alps, I have been surrounded by incredible mountains and lakes, so I was naturally compelled to go hiking and capture all those stunning spots. I would say that my childhood has played a significant role in my travels, my photography, and in what I am doing nowadays in Peru.

I love visiting places when it is off season to witness what people usually don’t see. Sometimes the weather can be incredibly dramatic, and this can bring some extra value to the experience – especially if you enjoy photography as much as I do!

"I decided to pursue an internship in Peru, where I hoped to explore another new and exciting culture."

I must say that falling in love with South America was super easy!  After my graduation I decided to visit Peru one more time. On this trip my girlfriend (and wife nowadays) also came with me. We both enjoyed the Andes so much that the idea of setting up a travel and trekking agency there came naturally.

So, why do I enjoy so much photography?

"Photography inspires me to move more and to explore places I would not visit otherwise. It allows me to appreciate the changing seasons and push my barriers and limitations."

To give you an example, I recently came back from a five-day expedition in the Andes where my friends and I had to climb over a 5,400-meter pass. This year we have travelled around China for five weeks, then about two months in Peru, and now we plan to ride a motorbike for five weeks in the Himalayas.

Photography has taken me far and it has allowed me to understand that going to remote places is what attracts me the most to the profession.

"I hope that one day my photography can inspire people as much as the images of other artists have inspired me."
