Best of the week 32 at #nomadict 2021
Two years ago I traveled around Kenya and Tanzania with my girlfriend. It was only one month before that we decided to go, super spontaneous. The night before the flight I found my old Canon and said to my girlfriend, “let‘s take the camera with us.”
Turned out to be a decision with huge consequences! During the trip, the animals and the magnificent landscapes caught me and all I wanted was to immortalize them on camera. That was when my passion for photography came to live.
This time in Africa was the start of my journey, but to be honest, the pandemic also had an influence on the growth of my passion, especially because of the time I suddenly had to spend on it. In my company, we had reduced hours and so I had a lot of time to teach myself almost everything about photography and editing. I also started exploring the Black Forest and other places around my hometown. As soon as I started sharing my pictures more on Instagram and getting positive feedback, I knew this was exactly what I wanted to do.

I really wanted to go there, explore this amazing piece of Earth, and of course – capture it in pictures. The decision to go there in July 2021 was even more spontaneous than the Africa trip. I had a few days of holiday left, so my girlfriend and I decided to go on a ten-day adventure in the Dolomites. Before leaving I made notes about the locations I wanted to shoot and made my plan.
The winning shot was taken at the Seiser Alm on a beautiful morning. It was the third place we visited in the Dolomites; before that we went to the area around the Tre Cime de Lavaredo and the Seceda. Unfortunately, we weren‘t that lucky with the weather when we were at these places, but I guess that‘s why luck was on our side at Seiser Alm this morning. It was a gorgeous sunrise and the fog was absolutely perfect. It was stunning to watch this place wake up! We walked down the till near the little huts and I found a great position for my camera. So, by waking up early, patience, planning and a little luck, this picture originated.
I had never been to the Dolomites before and I was overwhelmed by its overall beauty and the incredible panorama. But I would say this shot was taken at one of the most magical moments. When I stood there with my camera I took a deep breath and enjoyed the moment to the fullest. I don’t have words for how much I appreciated being there and watching this stunning sunrise. I felt free and at the right place at the right time. This was definitely one of the moments that perfectly explained why I love photography and why I follow my passion.

It was important to me to show how I felt this morning. I wanted to bring the magical moment to life in the photo for everyone looking at it to actually feel the freedom. I also wanted it to be real – that’s why I decided to go with this natural and light edit.
For me, every new surrounding holds a new challenge. Being there, taking pictures, and finding the right spots and compositions was the biggest learning during this trip to the Dolomites. I try to take away something from every situation, whether it’s about amplifying my photography knowledge, becoming more self-aware or connecting better to nature and my subjects. I learned something new this day and the learning will always continue, wherever I go, every day.
