My name is Constantin Seuss, I am a 22 year old photo- and videographer and currently I live in Bavaria, Germany. Being in nature, the mountains or at the beach is my favorite way to spend my leisure time, also because I am an enthusiastic sports climber doing bouldering, mountaineering and also skiing. That is where my passion for photo and videography started with not too long ago.

Two years ago I used to work in a climbing gym as a trainer and instructor for child, youth and senior groups. As climbing was not just my job but also my passion I thought it’d be a great idea to support the climbing-gym by taking care of their social media and helping them out with photography and videography content. So I bought a camera and what started with the idea of just supporting that gym from time to time turned out to somehow be my personal purpose in life. 

Unfortunately, these two passions of climbing and photo – and videography collided after a while. Maybe it was the fact that I spent too much time in the gym and there was this new, extremely interesting thing – my camera – which had opened a new door I just felt the urge to go through. Nevertheless, I still needed to work my 40 hours a week, which held me back from taking actions on my dreams and visions. Slowly I lost interest in climbing – I never stopped climbing, but at this time of my life I just lost that fire I used to feel for it. Someone once told me that when you make your hobby a profession, you lose a hobby. And that’s basically what happened. Just a job, that bored me real hard. Meanwhile I tried to find my way in photography and videography. I was a little afraid that the same would happen again with photography, but you never know until you try.

So, I spent a lot of time doing portrait shootings, and eventually my contract at the climbing gym ended as it was temporary. I decided to stop there and actually managed to make a living with photography. At least for some months. I did an immense amount of tfp-shootings without any actual goal, traveled way too much for that and also spent a lot of money on shootings that I did just for fun. Looking back, I’d say it was all about learning and finding myself and my niche in this business, but back then I was on my peak of “Mount Stupid”, as defined in the Dunning Kruger curve, a psychological model that explains how we estimate our own abilities at different stages of managing a certain skill.

Meet Constantin Seuss

Don’t get me wrong, I always stay professional while shooting especially with female models. I am convinced that it’s not just about delivery of good photos to the model, but also about the whole experience of having fun creating art together, feeling comfortable, safe and respected. With Nicole it was like that, but there was something more. There was this chemistry between Nicci and I, something special that we simply couldn’t ignore. Life is unpredictable – we both had just broken up with our ex partner and were sick of relationships. Despite, we deeply fell in love and are a couple for two years now. I don’t want to be too cliché, but I can confidently say that it was love at first sight. We often try to control everything, but these kinds of gifts life is surprising you with come unexpected and sometimes we have to follow our heart instead of doing what our focused mind tells us to do.

We dreamed about our future plans and all the places on Earth we wanted to visit. We agreed on one thing: Do it now. Because sometimes “later” becomes “never”. We won’t get any younger than we are right now. So since then we have been taking every opportunity to travel. People often ask us how we can afford traveling that much, but in fact we were and we still are, just two broke students who prioritize traveling and adventuring over partying and a pair of brand new shoes. This also shows in the way we travel as we are everything but luxurious travelers. Of course we somehow are forced to travel low budget as we are both students, but we also just enjoy the camping lifestyle. I think even if we had a greater budget we would choose camping and van life over hotels. Also I think the slower you travel, the more you see and the more you experience.

As we are a good mixture of mountain-lover and ocean-soul, we end up seeing lots of different places and landscapes inland and on the coast. Most of the time we are looking for beautiful nature, but here and there we also spend time exploring cities. Photography somehow became our way of enjoying places, and although it was more my thing in the beginning, Nicole got the flow and we became a team of two. We originally had the goal to share our story and dream of traveling the world through images, which it still is, but more and more we value the fact that we have these beautiful memories and moments documented for ourselves. This is what actually drives me to create. Photo or video, my goal is to tell stories – not only mine, but also others’.

We had a clear vision and the goal of one day making a living by doing what we love. We created concepts and plans on how we strategically needed to move on to get closer to our goal. We introduced us as a team, started networking, presented our concepts and stayed open minded. It has been a lot of work and it is not easy to reflect on your vision and divide goals into the smaller steps that hopefully bring you where you aim to be. Anyway, it worked. Until the COVID-19 appeared. We had gotten clients and our first, pretty big shoot for a brand, was about to take place on 21st March 2020. One day after Germany announced it’s lockdown… That was hard to take! But as said before, life is surprising us but not always in a nice way. I think the world had bad luck with corona in general and there are way more worse cases than mine, so I tried to make the best out of it.

I think I dealt with it pretty well. I managed to find back to my passion for climbing and mountain sports and had a lot of time to reflect on this short yet eventful journey. I had to cancel a lot of projects and plans, but after all I knew that after rain comes sunshine. I really don’t like spending my time complaining. Life is too short for that. I am healthy and that is all that matters. Photography won’t die because of corona. It just changes, especially in terms of travel and outdoor photography. I think that camping and van life will become more trendy than it is already, as it is all about local traveling now which is definitely good for the environment. As a photographer you need to adapt to the market more than ever before.

Personally I took the chance to guide tourists through my local area and to my favorite “secret” spots. It’s not the most known part of Bavaria – it is called Altmühltal – but I think it’s beautiful. I want to show people around and give them the opportunity to be photographed by me while they are exploring and having a good time. I am inspired by many things, nature, people, music and good coffee, but especially by the beauty of life and I love to share that with others.

I probably could write a thousand quotes of Christopher McCandless right here, because I try to reflect the essence of many of his words in my photography, but the most important one should be:

"Happiness is only real when shared."

My happiness comes from telling but also listening to stories, exploring the outdoors through climbing, mountaineering, camping, surfing… It fulfills me with joy to capture authentic and emotional outdoor explorations all around the world – living the experience and creating art together with others. And art should be shared, so even more people can be part of it. 

To come to an end, I think one short title describes this journey in the best possible way for me: Just the beginning.
