My name is Jorge Sardinha, I’m 29 years old, and I live in Évora.  I grew up on a hill in Alentejo, which is a region of Portugal that is characterized by vast plains, green fields, and beautiful trees. It is a very special region, both in terms of nature and community. Although mostly flat, in the city where I grew up, Estremoz, we have a mountain range called Serra D’Ossa, which contrasts with the typical plain of the Alentejo. This allowed me to enjoy both type of landscapes; I was very often outside. Besides, my grandfather is a farmer and as such he has always helped me to understand the importance of nature and the land in relation to human life.

For a long time, I took pictures with the iphone, especially during the golden hour on the Alentejo plains. I remember this photo I took on a little sunrise trip, very close from my parents home in Estremoz, to a place called Serra D’Ossa. There was no planned shot, the goal was to get up early and work with the conditions. When I parked the car on the top of a little hill, the moon was above a line of pine trees and the sky was full of pastel tones. The shot required little effort but turned out really stunning, I love it because of the simplicity and colors. Sunsets in general are wonderful, the atmosphere, the light, the colors… Every photographer understands. 

My interest in photography grew gradually and Instagram as a platform that allows your work to be viewed by a much larger audience has stimulated my desire to show new photos and improve. When you are doing something you love and the feedback is positive, it is very rewarding and you are encouraged and energized to continue. Plus, I follow very closely the work of Alex Strohl, Garrett King (Shortstache), Hannes Becker, Daniel Ernst, who continuously inspire me to continue photographing as well. The process of discovering a place, experiencing it, photographing it and editing it until I achieve a final image of a moment – an image that I identify with, that I feel, is simply wonderful and keeps me getting out there to start the whole process over and over again.

"Photography is a part time affair, but it’s my true passion."

I have a full time job; I am graduated in Environmental Engineering and work as a renewable energy engineer. I work on photovoltaic solar energy now; it is a very important area in the current context, especially with regard to climate change.  As I work all week, weekends are mostly dedicated to photography. In the future I would like to dedicate myself full time to photography, however, I cannot complain about my situation as how it is now. It is somehow nice as well to be limited in time for going on trips, because it remains something special and forces you to really seize the moment, live in the present and go with the flow. 

Everyone imagines a series of photographs that they intend to photograph in a certain location, and I do that too. However, the ability to make the most of the situation and conditions can lead to excellent results. Photography, for me, consists of moment, perspective and light. Actually, one of my favorite photos was taken in São Miguel, Azores. Our trip coincided with Hurricane Lorenzo, so the sea was very rough when we visited the Ponta da Ferraria. The waves were huge and the sea was very rough, which provided the perfect conditions for photographing the waves. After dozens of attempts, there’s this specific photo that I love, because of my connection with the sea and the waves. 

"I really want to visit the other islands of the Azores. It is an archipelago of islands and I only visited São Miguel, which is already breathtaking."

The feeling of experiencing that island is inexplicable. My reaction and that of my girlfriend when we landed on the island was a big smile of happiness. It is truly unique, the synergy of the ocean with the green landscapes and lagoons, resulting from the fact that the island is of volcanic nature, is incredible. I am a fan of waves, especially the big ones. I always loved going to the sea when the waves were big.

As we lived on the countryside, we often went to the beach for the weekend when I was young, and during our summer holidays the destination was also the beach. One of the most special places in mainland Portugal nearby the sea, was Vila Nova de Mil Fontes. I went there with my girlfriend to calm down and destress. The peaceful environment, the beautiful coast and the food provided us with happiness and surprise. It is a place and moment that we always remember with great affection.

"Actually, in one of my favorite movies, Into the Wild, there is a quote that sums up my feeling about the sea very well:

“The sea’s only gifts are harsh blows, and occasionally the chance to feel strong. Now I don’t know much about the sea, but I do know that that’s the way it is here. And I also know how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong but to feel strong. To measure yourself at least once. To find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions. Facing the blind death stone alone, with nothing to help you but your hands and your own head.” 

I would love to visit the Faroe Islands and Iceland. I imagine the wild ocean and rough coastlines, the waves crashing on the rocks. My idea is to improve my photography skills and then the ideal would be to visit these places based on partnerships with travel agencies, which could also be combined with commercial photographs aimed at showcasing various types of products in specific natural environments. I really want to improve my commercial photography and portrait skills so I can develop towards photography being a bigger part of my professional life. 

"I have always been taught that the most important thing in life is to be happy, that we must work hard to be good, both professionally and personally. And, no matter what, we should be kind and respectful."

My parents are the basis of everything and I am glad they instilled these values within me. Also my girlfriend, who’s always there for me, encourages me to be better and to follow my dreams. I feel that with their support, these values together with my passion and ambition for photography, I will get where I wish to be. I am aware of all the challenges that might appear on the road, and that it is not easy to climb up in the photography business nowadays, but that doesn’t get me down. Maybe I can even combine photography with my interest in and knowledge about renewable energy and climate change to somehow contribute to a better world – at least a little. Photography’s strength is to pass on messages or feelings visually, so we should use that.
