About “Northern hawk owl” and Magnus Berggren

“I was driving home from our cabin in the north of Sweden when I saw something on a treetop. I stopped the car and saw this little hawk-owl sitting in the tree. I waited for a while to see if it was bothered by my presence. It wasn’t, so I got out of the car, took some photos, and ended up with a great couple of close-ups.

I am lucky to have a lot of wildlife around my home, so I often go down to the woods and stay at locations where I know different kinds of wildlife are present. When photographing them, I like to get portraits – Close-ups to capture the animal’s soul.

I use Lightroom to edit my photos, and I try to have the same theme on all my pictures. In the beginning, I tried to figure out how other photographers that inspired me processed their images, and I just kept on editing and changing things until I got where I wanted. Finally, I managed to create my style.

I usually have a vision and imagine a result for the photo I want to edit. Then I crop it to get the composition right. I have a few presets that I’ve created, so I choose the one that goes best with the photo. Then I light up the parts of the image which I want to pop out and darken some parts that I want to diffuse, using a gradient filter. When editing this winning shot of the owl, I wanted to create a calm and minimalistic feeling and show the emotions I felt when I took the picture.

Nevertheless, the animals need to be always more important than [getting] the photograph and sharing it. This thought can be difficult to accept sometimes. However, it is more rewarding to witness a beautiful animal in its habitat, relaxed, a silent and magical moment between the two of you. Don’t you think?”
