About “Matterhorn, Switzerland” and Tom Fähndrich
“Landscape photography is very much based on a specific vision that we want to achieve. We imagine a scene, a composition that makes us dream. Going from vision to photograph is a process that requires a lot of creativity and research, as well as some luck. You need to know how to be in the right place at the right time, and often these are places that require a lot of effort to be reached at the most inconvenient hours.
What I have learned from my adventures as a landscape photographer, is that the efforts you make are very often rewarded by awe-inspiring landscapes and timeless moments. Views and experiences that people who don’t dare to go off the beaten path will never have. I always try to be where the crowds aren’t, and dare to venture into remote places. That’s where the breathtaking landscapes are hidden.
To get this winning shot, I woke up at 3 am to climb the mountain above the beautiful little village of Zermatt in the Swiss Alps. It took three hours of ascent in the dark and the cold to reach this small high altitude lake which offers a breathtaking view of one of the most famous mountains in the world – the Matterhorn.
I had spotted this perfectly oriented little lake on the opposite side of the mountain in advance and was determined to, one day, capture the perfect reflection of the mountain in the early morning with the sky catching fire. I could not, however, expect the result to be so dazzling.
The calm and silence that this image conveys make it just magical to me. That morning, when the sky started to catch fire and the tip of the mountain started to light up, it was as if time had stopped. Everything was so peaceful; the water shining and reflecting the Matterhorn like a mirror, the mountain lighting up little by little, the silent world slowly waking up… A moment I will never forget and an unexpected reward after the efforts made to reach this remote little lake during the night.”
