Maksym Mazur blends personal experiences with a deep curiosity for the world. Volunteering in a remote village sparked a commitment to document stories through photography, emphasizing people’s resilience. Working with Ukraine’s tourism ministry fueled his career growth, and in his article, we learn from his most valuable experiences, tips, and tricks as a professional photographer. And, of course, his winning photograph!

My passion for travel and photography has its roots in a combination of personal experiences and a deep-seated curiosity. From a young age, I was fortunate to have parents who valued exploration and adventure. They encouraged us to take family trips to various places, both near and far, and these journeys ignited my fascination with the world.

Travel, for me, is more than just visiting new destinations; it’s about immersing myself in different cultures, tasting local cuisine, and meeting people with diverse backgrounds. Each new place offers a unique story waiting to be told, and my passion for storytelling found an outlet through photography. Photography became a natural extension of my travels. It allows me to capture the essence of the places I visit, freeze moments in time, and share the beauty and diversity of our world with others. The camera lens has become my tool for self-expression and a way to convey the emotions and experiences I encounter during my journeys.

In addition to personal experiences, I find inspiration from the works of famous photographers and travel writers documenting the world’s wonders. Their ability to capture the essence of a place and convey its cultural significance has always motivated me to improve my skills.

Ultimately, my passion for travel and photography reflects my love for exploration, cultural immersion, and the desire to share the beauty and diversity of our world with others. It’s a lifelong journey of discovery and storytelling that inspires and enriches my life.

Tipping points

Several significant life experiences have deeply influenced my passion for travel and photography. These key turning points have shaped my perspective and ignited my pursuit of both travel and photography:

Family Adventures: From a young age, my family instilled a passion.

Cultural immersion: I studied abroad in a foreign country during college. This immersive experience allowed me to delve into a different culture, learn a new language, and connect with locals. This transformative period left a lasting impression and deepened my curiosity about the world.

Volunteer Work: I embarked on a trip to a remote village in a developing country. Engaging in community projects and love for exploration. Our family vacations to various destinations exposed me to the thrill of discovering new places, cultures, and people. These early experiences laid the foundation for my lifelong witnessing of the resilience and warmth of the people living there. They opened my eyes to the power of photography in storytelling. I started capturing the daily lives and struggles of the villagers, aiming to create awareness and change.

Iconic Landscapes: I had the privilege of visiting some of the world’s most iconic natural landscapes. Standing in front of majestic mountains, pristine beaches, and lush forests, I felt compelled to capture their beauty through photography. The desire to convey the awe-inspiring aspects of nature has been a driving force behind my photography.

Mentorship: I was fortunate to cross paths with a seasoned travel photographer who became my mentor. Their guidance, advice, and shared experiences deepened my understanding of photography and travel as an art form and a means of self-expression.

Life-Altering Journeys: Certain trips have been life-altering, introducing me to unique perspectives, challenging my preconceptions, and encouraging self-discovery. These journeys have underscored the transformative power of travel and its potential to reshape one’s worldview.

These moments and experiences have collectively fueled my pursuit of travel and photography. They have enabled me to embrace the world with a sense of wonder, and photography has become my medium for preserving and sharing the profound experiences that life on the road brings.

Four valuable lessons

Resilience and Adaptability: One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of strength and adaptability. Personal and professional life is full of unexpected challenges and changes. It’s crucial to be flexible, stay open to new possibilities, and find the strength to overcome obstacles. Resilience has taught me that setbacks are opportunities in disguise, and adaptability is the key to thriving in an ever-evolving world.

Continuous Learning: Life’s journey has shown me the immense value of lifelong learning. Both personal and professional growth require an open mindset and a willingness to acquire new skills and knowledge. Whether it’s through formal education or mentorship.

The Power of Empathy: Empathy has proven to be a transformative lesson in personal and professional relationships. Understanding and genuinely connecting with others, recognizing their perspectives, and offering support can create strong bonds and resolve conflicts. Empathy improves relationships and fosters more compassionate and inclusive self-directed learning. Embracing the concept of continuous improvement is essential for personal development and success.

Balance and Well-Being: Striking a balance between my personal and professional life has been a lesson that has significantly improved my overall well-being. I’ve realized that while professional success is important, it should not come at the expense of physical and mental health, family, or personal passions. Prioritizing self-care and maintaining a healthy work-life balance is crucial for long-term happiness and fulfillment.

These four lessons have profoundly shaped my personal and professional journey, guiding me toward a more fulfilling and purposeful life. They continue to serve as a compass in navigating the complex and ever-changing landscape of my personal and professional experiences.

Best of the Week 38

Amid the Covid lockdowns, my wife, Kristina, our faithful dog Earl, and I embarked on an extraordinary journey through Ukraine. One of our destinations was the renowned Tunnel of Love in Klevan. The world may have stood still, but the tunnel was open, offering a rare opportunity to travel.

Arriving in the morning, we found the tunnel drenched in golden sunlight. It was a fairytale scene, with just the three of us. The lush arch of leaves overhead, swaying gently, painted a picturesque landscape. Amid this enchantment, I snapped a photograph of Kristina and Earl.

This single photograph captured the essence of our journey – love, beauty, and the unexpected joys found during challenges. The tunnel was a reminder that life’s treasures are often hidden in the most unexpected places.

On post-production

The editing process for this photo was approached with a specific vision in mind. I wanted to enhance the enchanting atmosphere of the Tunnel of Love and capture the essence of that golden moment.

I used warm and vibrant colors to emphasize the beautiful play of light and shadow to achieve this. I increased the saturation of the leaves to bring out the lushness of the natural arch, making the tunnel feel even more inviting. The golden rays of sunlight streaming through the leaves were intensified to create a magical, ethereal ambiance.

I also adjusted the contrast and exposure to make the photo more dynamic, allowing the colors and details to pop.

The choice of these settings and colors was driven by my desire to convey the sheer beauty and enchantment of the moment. The warm and vibrant tones added depth and a touch of romance, enhancing the image’s emotional impact. My goal was to create a photograph that reflected the natural charm of the Tunnel of Love and encapsulated the joy and love shared during our visit, making it a timeless memory for me.

The most vital steps of my editing process for this particular photo were as follows:

Color Enhancement: I began by adjusting the colors to highlight the enchanting atmosphere of the Tunnel of Love. I increased the saturation of the green leaves to bring out their lushness and intensified the golden rays of sunlight to create a magical ambiance.

Contrast and exposure: I fine-tuned the contrast and exposure settings to add depth and dynamics to the image. This adjustment helped bring out the details in the photo and made the colors and lighting more vivid.

Cropping and Framing: I carefully cropped and framed the photo to ensure the focus remained on the central elements, namely my wife and our dog. This step allowed me to eliminate distractions and highlight their emotional connection.

These vital steps in the editing process were focused on enhancing the visual and emotional impact of the photo to create a captivating and enduring image that would convey the magic and beauty of our visit to the Tunnel of Love.

Creating this photo taught me a valuable lesson about the power of timing and the impact of natural lighting on photography. With its soft and warm sunlight, the golden hour in the Tunnel of Love transformed the scene into a magical setting. This moment taught me that sometimes, waiting for the right moment and embracing nature’s lighting conditions can elevate a photograph from ordinary to extraordinary. It reinforced the idea that, in photography, patience and an understanding of lighting are key elements in capturing moments of exceptional beauty.

Four ingredients for a great landscape photo

Creating a great landscape photo involves a combination of various elements. Here are four key ingredients for a great landscape photo:

Compelling Composition: A strong composition is fundamental. A good frame includes elements like the rule of thirds, leading lines, and framing to guide the viewer’s eye and create a visually engaging image.

Exceptional Lighting: The quality of light is crucial. The “golden hour” during sunrise or sunset often provides soft, warm, and directional light that can add depth and dimension to your landscape. Dramatic weather conditions like storms or fog can also create striking lighting effects.

Captivating Subject: A focal point or a fascinating subject within the landscape can anchor the image and draw the viewer’s attention. An example could be a prominent tree, a distinctive rock formation, a building, or even a person.

Attention to Detail: Paying attention to the small details, such as sharp focus, depth of field, and consideration of foreground and background elements, helps create a well-balanced and visually pleasing composition. Techniques like long exposure to flowing water or dynamic skies can add drama and a sense of motion.

When skillfully combined, these four ingredients contribute to a great landscape photo that captures the essence and beauty of the natural world.

An important professional project

Working with Ukraine’s tourism ministry was a career-defining experience. It allowed me to capture the diverse beauty of Ukraine, from the Carpathian Mountains to the historic charm of Lviv and the Black Sea coast. This project significantly boosted my career, featuring my work in international publications and exhibitions.

It opened new doors professionally, leading to travel assignments worldwide and partnerships with respected travel agencies. But beyond the professional gains, it deepened my appreciation for Ukraine’s culture and natural splendor. This project reminded me that photography is about storytelling and connections. Ukraine will always hold a special place in my heart for the incredible journey it has offered, both professionally and personally.

Future ambitions and projects

I envision a fulfilling and successful career that aligns with my passions and values in ten years. I want to be an established and renowned travel photographer and storyteller, continually exploring the world and sharing its beauty with others. To achieve this vision, I believe the following strategies will be essential:

Continuous Learning and Skill Development: I will commit to lifelong learning, honing my photography skills, and staying updated with the latest techniques and technologies in the field, including workshops, courses, and self-study.

Building a Strong Portfolio: Over the years, I will continue to build a diverse and captivating portfolio that showcases my unique style and storytelling abilities. High-quality and consistent work will be a cornerstone of my success.

Networking and Collaboration: I will actively seek collaborations with travel agencies, magazines, and influencers to expand my reach and gain exposure. Building a strong network within the travel and photography community will be crucial.

Marketing and Online Presence: Establishing a strong online presence through a personal website and social media platforms will be crucial for reaching a global audience. I will utilize these platforms to showcase my work, engage with followers, and share my travel experiences.

Financial Planning: Proper financial planning and budgeting will ensure that I can sustain a nomadic lifestyle and fund my adventures while maintaining financial stability.

Diversification: Exploring various revenue streams, such as selling prints, offering photography workshops, or writing travel-related content, will provide financial security and variety in my work.

Balancing Personal and Professional Life: Achieving a work-life balance and caring for my physical and mental well-being will be essential for long-term success and happiness.

Adaptability: Staying open to evolving trends in travel and photography and being adaptable to changes and challenges in the industry will help me remain relevant and successful.

Persistence and Resilience: Building a career in travel photography may come with challenges, but I’ll stay persistent, learning from setbacks and continually pushing forward toward my goals.

Personal Branding: Developing a strong personal brand as a travel photographer will help me stand out in a competitive field. Consistency in my style, message, and the stories I tell combines my passion for exploration and storytelling.
