I’ve always been traveling, mostly together with my wife and since two years with my little son. So traveling has been making up an important part of my life and photography somehow crept in. First in the form of a small digital camera that I took with me on my first excursions and trips, later with a large DSLR and now with a system camera, a Sony a7III. Then there is my passion for architecture. My photography became more professional because I had to deal with light, shadows, settings and technical equipment. I applied this knowledge and skills during my travels and my landscape photos got better. Since then, taking pictures has been really fun. Alongside my wife and little son, I try to go out and take pictures as often as possible. Together with the time I spend on searching photography locations, editing, the organization of photos and the social media aspect, photography takes up quite some time.
Actually, landscape photography in particular has become much more popular in Germany in recent years, especially through Instagram and the Germanroamers. Young people in particular are getting into photography, stimulated by the new technologies and social media. Which I find very positive, although it has certainly made it harder to distinguish yourself among all the photographers. It’s also an inspiration though; I often look at photos of other photographers that I like and try to find out what is special about the photo. Then I somehow try to incorporate this into my photos and create my own style. But I try too stay true to my style and to always try something new, I think that helps. I believe that staying true to yourself and enjoying what you do is especially important in here.
For my shot that won the best of the week, I went on an excursion to Saxony, Germany. I knew the bridge was somewhere in a forest in Saxony, but not exactly where. After a long search I found it, really in the middle of a very wooded area. I quickly unpacked my drone; I simply love the top-down photography with the drone. Unfortunately the light on that day was anything but good, so the post-processing took more time than normally, but I am quite satisfied with how it turned out! The processing of my photos is rather unspectacular anyway, but I always try to work out the mood well. This already occurs while taking pictures, but there is always something to improve. I don’t have a real goal of what my photos should convey, I would be just happy if many people like my photos and if they convey positive feelings.
Personally, I have had so much fun doing photography. I have discovered many countries, cities and natural sites. The best thing might even be all the people that I have met on these travels. Each place, each person, has certainly influenced me in a certain way, contributing to my professional and personal development. This all seems to go unconsciously and gradually, improving myself in many ways while having fun photographing and traveling. I guess that’s something to dream about!
