Landscape photography, the perfect art to have fun and challenge yourself!

Landscape photography, the perfect art to have fun and challenge yourself!

Photography is such a mystery to me. I’m not sure why I do it, who I do it for, or if I even do it correctly. I do know that it drives me, and that I cannot get enough of the sweet uncertainty that comes with seeking out those unique, oh-so-hard-to-find, compelling images. I lose at least as often as I win, but there’s nothing like the thrill of discovering that one treasure of a frame that you weren’t sure would reveal itself at all.

"Any art is unbelievably subjective, but I have to encourage my fellow photographers to push the envelope, experiment, and look for the unique shot rather than the one that guarantees you a pat on the back."

When I first started taking pictures, all I cared about was perfect front light, sharpness, low ISO, and clean, beautiful compositions. After several years of photographing owls and only recently trying my hand at landscapes, I’ve essentially thrown all that in the trash and focused my efforts on “feel.” I now hope my images might evoke an emotional response in the viewer, one that may or may not be intelligible by the left brain. I don’t give a rip if pixel peepers find flaws or “mistakes” in my images, but I do care whether or not photographers and non-photographers alike feel something when they see my photos.

"I assess an image’s potential prior to public sharing by measuring what or how much I feel while editing."

In short, photography is fun and challenging. I don’t really know what the hell I’m doing, but I am totally in love with it and thankful for forums like IG and others where artists can share with and inspire one another. It’s a gift to have such easy access to so many incredibly talented artists.

"We push each other and all become better together. You just can’t beat that."
