Lake Gerold, one of the best kept secrets in Upper Bavaria

Lake Geroldsee

One of the best kept secrets in Upper Bavaria

Bavaria joined the German Empire in 1871 and has been part of Germany ever since. Today one can still enjoy the ancient heritage of this region, which has been well conserved. A clear example are the royal castles built by the former kings in the mountains offering idyllic views, especially to photographers.

But this region is much more than castles. Nature here is outstanding!

Famed for its jagged mountains and fir-lined valleys, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is truly a one-of-a-kind destination. The quaint alpine shapes and stunning vistas are characteristic of this part of the Bavarian Alps, as this picture illustrates.

Although the journey to this lake is highly enjoyable (you will be hiking through forest ascending summits, pastures and moorland), it is said that the real reward of this hike is the lake Wagenbrüchsee, which is better known as Geroldsee.

This little secret can easily be overlooked since it is not directly visible from the street. If you would like to swim and relax at the lake, you can leave your car in Gerold and then walk directly to the site. On the shores of Lake Gerold you will find plenty of sunbathing areas for you to enjoy!

Surrounded by amidst meadows and forests, the morning vibe here is quite magical. Specially when a mystical fog covers it all. However, sunsets are the real deal! On cleared days, the sun illuminates the majestic mountains (Wetterstein and Karwendel) surrounding the lake.

What a special experience is to contemplate the sunset surrounded by mountain peaks and shimmering hidden lakes!
