I remember always sneaking into my parent’s bedroom when I was a little, grabbing one of those disposable cameras, hoping there were still some shots left to take. In my teen years I started to get more into photography, using a point and shoot camera until my 17th when I finally got a DSLR. Compared to photography, my passion for traveling came a little late. When I went on a cruise to the Mexican riviera with my parents and family for New Years, I discovered that I enjoyed going to a new place. I didn’t do much with this right afterwards, but later on I got this need of going somewhere new again and decided to backpack through Europe.
You can imagine that, since I started traveling, photography has become a bigger part of my life as well. I got to know many people because of photography; I used to shoot for local bands at local venues which opened a new circle of friends and acquaintances. With traveling, I got to step out of my comfort zone and talk to random strangers, ask them to pose for my pictures which is one of the many challenges I face as a solo traveler. Photography made me discover hiking, trekking, and more recently mountaineering. As a landscape photographer, I feel doing those things are a must but I’ve learned to love doing them. It’s a very self-rewarding feeling to go off the beaten path, getting those shots and getting to live that experience.
I have been shooting for about ten years now and I am still learning every day, from my travel experiences, but also about shooting techniques. For example, all these years being passionate about photography and I had never really paid attention to the histogram, something I am learning about just now. I guess practicing is the best way though; I try to learn from my own photos. When I sit down and open them in lightroom I see the things that I could have done better, whether is composition or exposure settings, and I take that into consideration when I’m shooting the next time. Besides photography, I recently started learning about videography. I feel like with video you can show better how the experience was like; the culture, the sound…
If not, I still see myself traveling doing what I enjoy the most, adventuring in new places and taking photos. When I look at photos of beautiful places, I feel a desire to go there, and I actually go there. I hope other people have the same with my photos, that it actually moves people to experience different things and places. For example, I visited the White Sand National Monument in New Mexico. I’d say it is a must photography spot, but also a must experience spot. It is very different from visiting the typical reddish-orange sand color desert; the sand feels different and seeing the sun going down the endless plain of white sand until it hits the mountains, is wonderful.
