Skye is probably one of the most spectacular sceneries in Planet Earth. This Island is located in the north part of Scotland and is home to several natural attractions which make of Skye a world wide recognized spot. The Quiraing and the Old Man of Storr are clear examples of why this Island has become so popular, attracting thousands of tourists every year that come along to enjoy the unique beauty of Skye.
Movies such as ‘Prometheus’ have contributed to the popularity of Skye, nevertheless, today travel and landscape photographers from social media make up a large percentage of the people traveling to the Island. One of the main characters capturing the contrasts and breath taking landscapes of Skye is based in Uig, a small town home to one of the main harbors of the Island. Hamish, best known at Instagram as @hamishmorrison has been collecting moments of this Island for years now, and although he is still really young, his photography could not be more mature and inspiring.
His vision of Skye represented in moody days and green sceneries is really hot nowadays, calling the attention not only of social media users and other landscape photographers, but also of huge enterprises in the touristic sector such as ‘Visit Scotland’ for instance.
It is a huge honor for us to welcome Hamish to our community! In order to know more about his vision as a landscape photographer and to understand his success on social media we asked Hamish 9 questions and the following were his answers:
How often are you able to see wild life as close as you did taking this picture and what were you thinking capturing this moment?
Actually not that often, lucky for me these deer reside in Glen Etive and although still wild, they are extremely tame. Find the right one and it’ll eat straight out of your hand which is initially quite a surreal moment. If you’re looking for a tame animal in Scotland, go for a sheep! those guys really aren’t fussed when you’re around them. However, a lot of wildlife in Scotland require quite the mission to get close to, they can be extremely timid.
As a local of Skye, what impresses you the most of this Island?
What impresses me most about Skye is being able to have such a plethora of incredible landscapes so close together. 10 minutes from my door and I can be in some of the most incredible places on earth and that will never get old.
If you had to chose, what three places from Skye would you recommend to visit to our readers?
My top 3 recommendations would include; The Storr due to its other worldly rock pinnacles and relatively easy walk. The Quiraing, which is equally as incredible and has panoramic views all around. Lastly I would recommend visiting Neist Point.
There really is nothing quite like this headland as it juts out of the land to produce Skye’s most westerly point. Hit this spot at sunset and you’re in for an impressive evening.
Where or how do you find inspiration for your photography?
Living in Scotland, inspiration is not difficult to find. Being in a place so visually impressive is what made me pick up a camera in the first place. I loved the idea of being able to capture this place at its best, and thats still what drives me today.
If you had the opportunity of going back in time to capture an experienced moment again, which one would be?
If I got an opportunity to re-experience a moment again it would be a 2015 sunrise at the Quiraing, the whole area was blanketed with snow and I was the only person there and as the sun rose, the light coated the landscape perfectly – you can’t really beat moments like that.
Can you tell us the most crazy anecdote that ever happened to you being outdoors?
To be honest the craziest thing that happens when I’m outdoors is the weather. In Scotland the weather changes so fast, like seriously fast. So I’ve been outside and in the space of 15 minutes I’ve had the every possible season thrown at me at once, from wind and rain to sleet and snow. Really have to be prepared for that, but as the old saying goes – if you don’t like the weather wait 5 minutes!
Can you name your top 3 landscape photographers on IG?
Now that’s a tough question, I follow a large amount of landscape photographers but a few that come to mind are @manueldietrichphotography, he is just a master with everything to do with a camera, photo or video. Secondly, @damonberryman after discovering and meeting up with him recently I quickly saw how similar our outlook on photography was and above all his work is just top notch. Lastly, @kpunkka no reasoning needed for that guy really, he’s just ridiculous talented and his images are mind-blowing.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I’m really not sure where I see myself in 10 years, hopefully doing something similar to what I’m doing now. Who knows whether that will be with Instagram or some other future platform, but hopefully something to do with photography. However life is always unpredictable so we’ll see where it goes.
Can you fix the world in one sentence?
I think everybody just needs to stay genuine and true to themselves and people should just be a bit nicer to each other. Although if it were that simple you wouldn’t need to ask me that question!
