This article follows Phil’s path as a photographer, sparked by his unwavering love for exploration and ignited during post-university travels. Through his lens, we traverse Phil’s transformative journey across captivating landscapes, from the rugged beauty of the Canadian Rockies to the fiery spectacle of Volcán de Fuego in Central America, where he captured the winning shot.
From a young age, I’ve been driven by a deep passion for travel and a curiosity about the unknown. Despite my love for photography, I initially veered away from it as a career choice. However, after graduating from university, I rediscovered my passion for travel and photography, especially in the Canadian Rockies, in 2018. There, I began to explore the possibilities of photography, reigniting my creative spark. Embracing these passions has brought me fulfillment and taught me the importance of following what truly brings joy and meaning to my life.
After university, I worked various jobs and diligently saved up for my first major travel adventure. Determined to see the world, I planned a six-month journey spanning multiple continents. Excitement peaked when I applied for World Cup tickets in Brazil, aiming to add a thrilling experience to my itinerary. However, I received disappointing news while in Thailand—I hadn’t secured any tickets. Rather than letting this setback deter me, I made a pivotal decision: I wouldn’t return home. Fast forward a decade, and I’ve explored over 30 countries across five continents, living in four of them along the way. Now, as a permanent resident of Canada, my journey continues to unfold, fueled by a passion for exploration and discovery. Along the way, I have learned four valuable lessons:
1. Anything is possible. You have to make a plan and go after it.
2. You can read books, watch videos, and listen to stories, but you will never know how an experience affects you until you experience it yourself.
3. We, as humans, are tougher than we think. It takes stepping outside our comfort zone to find out.
4. Love is the best feeling in the world. Being in love with a person, a place, or a moment is something everyone should experience and something that will stay with you forever.
Visiting Volcán de Fuego has long been a dream of mine, predating even my photography pursuits. I vividly recall the awe-inspiring image of the volcano erupting at night, etching itself into my memory. Despite this persistent desire, other adventures often took precedence, relegating it to the back burner over the years.
However, as the Canadian Rockies experienced uncharacteristically warm and dry conditions this winter, I seized the opportunity to embark on a solo journey to Central America for 11 days. The trip culminated in my long-awaited visit to the volcano—a fitting finale to my adventure.
Anticipation mounted as I approached the volcano, fueled by years of imagery, anecdotes from friends, and online research. Yet, nothing could prepare me for the firsthand experience. Standing in the presence of Volcán de Fuego exceeded all expectations, leaving an indelible mark on my soul. It was a breathtaking conclusion to an unforgettable journey.

Editing process
I deliberately chose this composition to maximize the dramatic impact of the volcano’s eruption. From the outset of my trip, I was fixated on capturing the eruption against the backdrop of the night sky. The allure of the stars twinkling overhead, juxtaposed with the fiery spectacle of lava soaring through the air and cascading down the volcano’s slopes, promised a truly awe-inspiring image.
The decision to shoot at night was strategic, as it allowed me to heighten the visual impact and convey the sheer power and magnificence of the eruption. The resulting image encapsulates the moment’s essence, evoking a sense of wonder and awe that words alone cannot convey.
In line with my approach to editing, I opted for a minimalist touch, employing just five masks to enhance specific elements of the image: the sky, stars, eruption, and foreground. Rather than manipulating colors extensively, I allowed the natural hues of the scene to shine through. The deep blue of the sky perfectly complemented the fiery tones of the lava—creating a striking contrast that heightened the overall visual impact of the photograph. This harmonious blend of colors and editing resulted in a captivating image that authentically captured the raw beauty of the volcanic eruption against the backdrop of the night sky.
In addition, a crucial step in my editing process was ensuring the lava eruption stood out prominently. I boosted its brightness and clarity while darkening the sky in the background to heighten the contrast, intensifying the scene’s dramatic impact.
Personal and professional projects
My most significant personal project involved completing and capturing a polar plunge during the harsh winter freeze of the Canadian Rockies. With temperatures plummeting to -32°C (-39°C with wind chill), I embarked on this daring endeavor with my friend Pete to document the extraordinary moment. Anticipating ideal photography conditions, I was pleasantly surprised by the stunning outcome of the images.
This experience profoundly illustrated the human body’s resilience, pushing boundaries beyond what we perceive as possible. It marked a pivotal shift in my photographic focus—from capturing awe-inspiring landscapes to documenting remarkable individuals engaging in extraordinary feats within breathtaking environments.
Future ambitions
In ten years, I would like to be a full-time adventure photographer. My strategies for getting there are to continue learning, be consistent, and get outside of my comfort zone as much as possible.
