My name is Dor Zammir, 23, from Israel. As far as I remember I’ve always been passionate about nature. As a teenager, I went on different trips with school; each year we did at least one. During that time, my love for photography slowly developed as well. I would always make compositions with my hands of views I thought would make a good photo, haha. However, the years have passed by and I didn’t really do anything serious related to photography, because my passion for electronic music was stronger.
In 2016, when I was a soldier in the IDF, my father got me a Nikon D5500 with a basic kit lens (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6). I didn’t have much opportunities to go out to photograph, apart from when I had free days to go back home and on family holidays in Greece. I live in the north of Israel, in a Kibbutz called Ein Dor.
When I finally finished my army service, in June 2018, I moved out to a different town where I lived and worked for a while. I saved up some money and decided to get two new lenses: a 10-24mm Wide-Angle Zoom & a 35mm f/1.8. I kept photographing and in November 2019 I quit my job to follow my passion. I directly booked a flight to Switzerland, where I volunteered for a whole month in a little village called Gimmelwald, which is located in the heart of the Swiss Alps. This allowed me to see more from Switzerland and improve my photography skills;
During my IDF service, as said, I couldn’t really go out to shoot, but I did have a lot of free time, which I then spent on downloading RAW images from the internet and editing them. So in that sense, I could develop a lot. I played with colors and light and always aimed to reach a complete image where the landscape, the composition and the colors match with each other. But even more important to me is the emotion that the photo conveys; I want to deliver a feeling. I try my best to make the viewer feel something and to get an aesthetically satisfying image so viewers can really enjoy watching the photo, as when I am contemplating the landscape before taking a photo.
Photography taught me to enjoy privacy, solitude, and quietness. It made me focus more on nature rather than on myself or on everything that actually doesn’t matter, which easily happens in such a self-centered society we live in today.
It also gave me a hobby that I truly love to invest my time in and to get better at. Although I think that photography is not very common as a hobby or profession in Israel in general. In contrast to that, traveling is super popular. After the army many people go traveling the world and Israel itself has many different kinds of views to offer. From the Dead Sea (the lowest place on Earth) and beautiful blue beaches to amazing desert landscapes and lots of valleys & rivers in the north.
