I thought photographers were very cool; with their big cameras and professional positions they were taking to get a good shot at an event. And so I started myself too when I was about 17, 18 years old. When I look back I think it’s not the best motivation to get into photography, but when my knowledge grew, my interest did too. After 3 years of shooting events, which was my main focus, I wanted something different. It started to feel as a job, like I felt obligated to shoot every event happening while I simply loved it when I just began doing it. So as I needed some change, I started traveling.
I’m someone that overthinks every aspect of their life and nature makes me turn it all off for a while. I am doing landscape photography for three years now and it has never felt like a job or bored me. I am currently working fulltime as a real estate photographer and combining this with event and nature photography I keep the balance; I really enjoy each of them.
I make sure I keep developing in each of the too. I believe in constant self improvement; when I’m not learning creatively I get bored. Meeting up with photography friends, going to lectures, watching YouTube tutorials and practicing outside are all ways of learning I am incorporating to improve my skills. I have friends in the event photography business who pretty much taught me to use my camera and who believed in me, letting me shoot big events in my early stages as a photographer. They gave me a jumpstart like no other!
Concerning landscape photography, I pretty much pushed myself. Living in Belgium, I am kind of privileged as there are so many beautiful spots so close to me. Locations like Gaierlay Bridge and the cliffs of Etretat are just a six hour drive away, and these are just two examples. So it’s quite easy to get in the car on a weekend day and find a spot to practice and enjoy a little adventure in nature.
My main gear is canon 6D with a 17-40mm for landscape but I also use a tamron 24-70mm G2 and a 70-200mm. But I see my gear more as a tool to get shots, so I might be a little reckless with my gear sometimes but that’s mainly because I focus on my idea and not on the gear in my hand. I am quite impulsive sometimes, so if I see a nice bird, as an example, I quickly want to find a composition and photograph it.
When editing pictures, I always start with some presets I used in the past so I can quickly see what the possibilities are. When people are looking at my pictures I want them to see and feel what I saw and felt at that moment I got the shot. In my landscape photography, I love to capture as wide as I can. So you can feel little in this big beautiful world. And when looking at my event photography, I want them to feel the joy and happiness the people in the picture are experiencing. So I love to go close, into the action!
Whether it is landscape, real estate or event photography, photography in general helped me to find purpose in life. Now I know much more about it and photography is part of me now, but it’s interesting how something can feel so right when you do it for the first time.
