Traveler based in Switzerland

My name is Lauriane Fatton and I am a 26 year-old primary school teacher, tattooist, and author and illustrator of children’s literature. On my spare time I really enjoy exploring nature, specially if I carry my camera with me.

I would like to open my story saying that I have been greatly influenced by all you and your beautiful art! As a result, on my last holiday I decided to visit the Faroe Islands. This archipelago looks amazing on photographs, but being there and experiencing its vibe felt like a completely world to me. It is quite amazing to think that on the Faroes there are more sheep (80,000) than inhabitants (50,000)!

To explore “Føroyar”, which translates to "Sheep Islands", was a wonderful experience.

I guess that I really enjoyed that area because I could see how well animals and nature can coexist. On the other hand, there is an ongoing debate about the Grindadráp, which is an ages-old tradition of killing dolphins on the beaches around the archipelago.

In order to abolish this tradition, many associations suggest foreigners to don’t visit the islands. Personally, I hesitated for a while. But if you think about it, the Faroes has become really open to tourism, which is the islanders’ main source of income today. I believe that it is precisely this tourism what has helped change attitudes where whaling was once practiced such as Newfoundland and Greenland.

"Some whalers have been converted to bring tourists on whale-watching safaris for instance."

Nowadays we all have the opportunity to convey our emotions and ideas through photography. Furthermore, we can share our photos with the rest of the world instantly. Photography gave me inspiration to travel and discover the Faroes.

"I hope that in return I can inspire others to protect our nature, either our plants and animals or our glaciers and water. After all, “in all things of nature there is something of the marvelous!”
