About “Red Fox, Virginia” and Nick Boris
“After seeing a friend post on Instagram that she found a fox, eagles, and a barred owl at a state park south of DC, I made plans to set out the next day to find the fox and owl. Using my network of friends and park service personnel, I headed into the park looking for the barred owl in the first place. As the sun was setting, I packed up, shot off a couple of sunset photos, and decided to call it a day.
Driving out of the park, I suddenly saw the fox cross the road into the tree line. Surprised and filled with excitement, I slowly halted my car to not spook him, opened my car door, and literally army-crawled around the back of my car and off the road. Being 6’5” (198cm), walking straight up would likely scare the fox, so it was best to get low to pose no threat. He was so comfortable around me, walking closer and closer until he was 20’ (6m) away. Being comfortable allowed him to act normally, which is what we want when documenting wildlife. I was so in the moment and focused on shooting at the same time. It’s incredible because you are there sharing the moment with these amazing animals, and at the same time, you’re someplace else documenting those very moments.
The composition, as you see it in this photo, was my top choice because the background had no distracting elements, which is something I always look for. The fox was graceful with his body facing the left frame, and he was looking towards the right side of the frame as the clouds moved and the low sun flooded the forest with golden light. The light illuminated his face, allowing you to see beautiful catchlights adding depth and a window into his gentle soul. Shooting in a portrait composition enhances this and brings my viewers face-to-face with him.”
