My name is Cuneyt Sarvazlar and I’m a passionate photographer from Istanbul, Turkey. Photography started for me in 2016, when one evening I was enjoying the beautiful seascape at the local beach, watching the sky, observing the movements and shapes of the clouds. I started to take photos with my phone and continued shooting until sunset. From that day on, I started googling and researching about landscape photography and before I knew I was using my girlfriend’s DSLR, taking my first long exposure shots on the same local beach.
I was following work of photographers on different platforms, but mainly on Instagram. I realized that many photographers were very serious about photography, getting paid for it or exchanging anything for their work. Knowing that I could actually make a living out of something I discovered I was passionate about encouraged me to work hard for it. I bought my own camera in 2017. Meanwhile, I was doubting whether I should go to university or not.
Assignments at school are mainly about theories and documentaries and we also get to learn the history of photography, which is quite interesting. Now I know about the chemical advances we have made regarding visual communication from its very first existence until now. For example, I got to print a photo last year with an aggrandizer in the darkroom and developed over 15 rolls of 35mm films. It was super fun and interesting; I love to research about my passion and trying new things related to photography. Now I am in my third year of my bachelors in Photography and I keep learning or practicing, even if classes are over.
When it comes to keeping myself motivated and to continuously develop my skills, I try to be disciplined and get up early, starting a new productive day which makes me feel satisfied. Also, I make sure I am always in touch with others, sharing work and providing each other with feedback so I can understand my weak and strong points related to photography. I care a lot about colors and I want to tell a story, so it’s interesting what other people perceive. Color theory is a huge part of photography, but even though I have knowledge obtained during my studies about this, I find myself not using this knowledge. I love epic sunrises and sunsets like everyone, but I am not using these warm tones for the story I want to convey with my edit.
As you can see, I really love cold climates for photography so I prefer to shoot at blue hours or overcast weathers. I have a long list of countries with these conditions where I would like to travel to somewhere in the near future! After graduating from the university and hopefully having saved enough money, I will try to move to my dream place on Earth which is Canada. Then I want to see Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, Norway, Chile and Antarctica.
If we are open for it, there is so much to tell and I think that is one of the most beautiful things about photography… It allows you to meet new people, places, cultures, and so much more. It doesn’t matter what kind of photography we are producing, we are learning a lot of things along the way, for instance about anthropology, social relations and emotional intelligence, respect to other cultures… I am still discovering myself within all that surrounds me, while working on my personal projects such as traveling the world and photography. Now I am traveling with my girlfriend whenever it’s possible; exploring and making memories in Turkey. About 50% of our costs are covered or sponsored by clients whom I’m working for and sometimes we exchange our work for accommodation. But of course there are so many places left that we want to see together.
One thing I always will try to achieve is to demonstrate with my photography how important it is to protect our home, the planet, for ourselves and future generations. Of course I hope to inspire people to go outdoors and discover it themselves. Photography has a universal language and I believe that if people would pay more attention to it, they will always get inspired or encouraged in some way, when acknowledging what the photograph and the used colors are telling you and what emotions it arouses.
