My name is Thomas Gallopin, I am 21 years old and live in Haute Savoie, France. I was eleven years old when I started to feel this passion for nature and landscapes. That Christmas, I asked for a camera and that was what I found under the tree. I made my very first photos with that camera. I was pretty lost in the beginning, but learned fast and this camera became my most loyal companion during my little adventures in nature after school or on the weekend.
It was a risky decision concerning my age, but during my studies I had obtained a lot of knowledge about the commercial site of photography. Before opening the gallery, I knew about the different aspects and concepts of the photography market. Like with every kind of business, the beginning is difficult, but after some months the business was up and running, and I started to get recognition within the region where I have my gallery.
Meanwhile, I have always educated myself, learning about all the topics related to photography by watching tutorials, but also by going outside and practice. I am every day in the field, I seek and exploit all possibilities. I travel Europe in search of places that fascinate me, places where nature remains intact without traces of the man. Besides, we all need some sources of inspiration to keep being creative and innovative, in photography, but also for anything else. My inspiration comes from everywhere, but especially from some photographers whose work I admire, and from music.
If you ask me, my favorite place to be is in the mountains. My approach is to show the wild and raw beauty that it can offer, between these summits and its glaciers. Also, it’s in the mountains where we find the most beautiful light; a light very changeable and capricious, which I love. It can be super strong, or very soft, which in turn influences the ambiance. Experiencing all the four seasons at the same time isn’t rare when you’re up in the mountains. I particularly love Winter; it’s just magical to be up there. The snow covers the mountains and the frosty atmospheres give a very majestic mood to the photos.
The only spots that I try to avoid, are the touristic ones. I believe that finding your own spots is so much more rewarding and original, even though, at some point, you often end up visiting some of these touristic spots as well. For example, I want to go to the Lofoten in Norway, to see the fjords and the high summits, and to photograph the northern lights. And also to Patagonia. This place has fascinated me since I was very little; the mountains, the ambiances you can find but also the natural elements made me dream. I would love to go there for several weeks to capture the unspoiled nature. But even when I head to more known places, I spend time finding specific spots. I always investigate in advance; every photo is in my head even before having been there.
For the post treatment of my photos, I have a particular universe and as said, I already know it when I take the picture. I have a dark style in which I like to play with mystery and to emphasize certain elements. I like the detail and being in the mountains, climbing the peaks and going off road helps us to find these details that will make the difference. A texture, a rock, everything can be beautiful with the right light. I wish to show the still wild beauty of the mountains and other places, still virgin and protected. By sharing my photos in social media, I hope to show that there is so much more out there than what you first may see on Internet or Instagram.
I also met hundreds of photographers because of photography, sharing a passion for nature. Landscape photography became essential to me, it punctuates my daily life and I could not do without it. My urge to travel is still becoming stronger, as well as my desires for always higher peaks and my wish to capture all this beauty.
