I was given a GoPro action cam as a gift a few years ago. What they didn’t know – neither did I – was that a passion for photography was part of that gift. I started taking the GoPro with me every day to experiment and share my shots online. My dad, also fond of photography, and my girlfriend immediately supported me and encouraged me to go on travels and photography excursions.
It was very cold that evening, I remember that my hands were freezing holding the remote control of my drone. I waited a long time before I could capture the perfect moment during the sunset. When I finished the edit, I felt very satisfied; the contrast created by the black sand and the sunlight reflecting on the water and coloring the clouds in the background. I still feel very happy when looking at this shot. When I edit my shots I always try to maintain a particular and uniform line of colors in order to create a photo gallery that has a certain impact.
I was lucky with the weather that day I took the winning shot, but the conditions are never as expected. I think that the adverse weather conditions are among the most complicated obstacles to manage in the world of travel photography. It has happened to me several times that I organized an excursion and then found myself in the middle of a storm. In these situations, I always try to calm my nervosity and concentrate fully on finding and achieving an alternative by taking advantage of the details highlighted by the rain such as the reflections on wet surfaces, the drops on the vegetation and much more.
For instance, I learned to repair my camera when being in areas with a high level of humidity. It sounds trivial, but when you are in one of the most fascinating places on the planet, the brain can be too impressed by the surroundings to be fully sagacious. I was in Iceland and unfortunately I damaged my camera making it unusable near the famous Skogafoss waterfall. There was a lot of vapor in the air and I should have used a cloth to dry the camera continuously and a protective case to block dust and water drops. After this mishap I realized that you learn something much more easily only after you have made a mistake, because as obvious things may be, we don’t always see them until we become aware of them by making a mistake.
The northern lights is definitely one of them. I attended this fantastic nature show with my girlfriend Sara. I remember this shot as if it were yesterday. I constantly checked the sky from the hotel room and looked at the “My Aurora Forecast” application on my phone because the odds were high and I absolutely didn’t want to miss this incredible phenomenon. After a few hours I managed to catch a glimpse of the fantastic green / blue light in the sky and we immediately plunged onto the seashore to enjoy it and to take exciting photographs.
I don’t often think about the future as I try to focus more on the present. But I would certainly like to be able to travel more and live a wide range of experiences that help me become better, both as a professional and as a human being. Photography has helped me to become more appreciative and the professional experiences that I have had the opportunity to carry out have allowed me to grow personally and professionally.
Exchanging opinions and techniques with them and obtaining feedback has enabled me to become independent in this profession. If there’s one thing I would highly recommend anyone willing to learn photography, it is to connect and meet as much as possible with fellows. It is just such an amazing feeling and vibe; sharing your passion, practicing, exchanging, learning, and above all enjoying.
