Best of the week 51 at #nomadict 2020
The first time I had a go at photography was in a 2-day photography-course during a project week in my high-school. I was 13 years old and lent my uncle’s Sony camera. There I learnt a lot about the basics, which I then never forgot. I kept on taking pictures on my cell phone and edited them in the photos app. A few years later a friend of mine told me about a camera for sale by someone I knew. It was the spring of 2017 when I bought the used Sony a6000 with two kit lenses. I started to take pictures and apply the knowledge of the course I had 4 years prior to then. I then attempted to edit the pictures I shot, in the cheapest professional editing software I could find.
The following fall we travelled to the US to meet up with my family. Knowing that, I ordered a Sony a7 with a 28-70 mm kit lens to upgrade my equipment. I used that to further gather experience and then started to invest more and more time into taking pictures and editing. I learned that you can only get better with collecting experience. Eventually I started my Instagram account to share my travels and let people all around the world see how I see the world through my viewfinder. Since the launch of my page I have learned a lot.

For a long time I didn’t know how to express my creativity. With photography I was able to find my creative outlet. It is an amazing way to do so, because with photographs you can reach so many people. There is no language barrier. My goal with my page and photography is to let the people see the beauty of nature and travel, no matter what they have going on in their lives at the moment or where they are in the world. Photography has therefore become a big part of my life. Pretty much everywhere I go, I take my camera with me. Just in case there is a special moment I want to capture. Many things I do now revolve around the hobby that quickly became my passion.

Many people dream of visiting this country. I am fortunate to call this amazing place my home. I grew up 15 minutes away from Appenzell which would also be known as postcard Switzerland. When I take pictures I often gravitate towards that region and the surrounding mountains. There are some really iconic places, which have become really popular over the past few years, that are a stone’s throw away from where I live. Many of the places I post from, I have visited many times as a toddler, hardly able to walk on my own. I definitely am grateful for the possibility to get into the car and drive for an hour and be at some of the prettiest places our country or even planet has to offer. I am also a hot-air balloon pilot, which is a great combination with photography. Being able to see the landscape from above provides another perspective. It allows me to not only see the beauty of nature from the ground, but also from above.

This year’s travel plans changed after the pandemic restricted our options. My girlfriend and I actually planned to do a road-trip down into Italy. We then decided that it would be safer to stay in Switzerland and are really grateful that we did. This road-trip quickly led us to realize how beautiful our home-country is and all of the different beautiful places it has to offer. We only visited a few places in the time we had, but we noticed that there is so much more to discover. Even though Switzerland is a small country, it has a beautiful place in every little corner!

My girlfriend and I were sitting at home in the fog. We usually like to get out for sunset, especially when it is foggy the whole day. I then checked the webcams for Säntis, which is the tallest mountain of the Alpstein massif, and it looked like we would have to take the cable car up there to escape the fog. Without doubts we got in the car and drove to the station. The goal was to be up there for sunset, and we quickly saw that we weren’t the only ones with that idea. However, as soon as the cable car took us out of the fog, that didn’t matter anymore. The view we had from up there was just breathtaking. It was a sea of clouds with mountain peaks peeking out everywhere. I waited for the sun to set a bit more and captured the beautiful panorama.
"What makes it special to me is that it is another beautiful sunset spent with my girlfriend."
We try as often as we can to take the time to head out for sunset. Another special thing about this shot is that we made a new friend that evening. While I was standing there taking pictures a guy took one of my girlfriend and me without us noticing. He then asked if it was okay if he would use it. In the end we drove him to the nearest train station and have since stayed in contact.
Photography has allowed me to visit amazing places and meet amazing people. Since I have been taking pictures I look out for small details in nature. Something that I have become aware of, is that we have to take care of our planet if we want to enjoy all of the beauty and nature it has to offer. It only requires a small effort. Small actions can also have a large impact. Whether that is to take your trash home after a day of hiking in the mountains or you try to reduce the amount of animal products consumed. Every little action can have an impact!
